Leadership Programme

Jason Tapper

What a fantastic week! I was somewhat apprehensive and sceptical about the Programme, but as it came highly recommended I had to approach it with an open mind. As I was very new to this type of training I was a little anxious, but the team provided a wonderful environment that was extremely well planned and balanced making the week pass so quickly.

I was able to learn so much about myself which helped me acknowledge why and how I thought, and more importantly to realise the effect I have on others. It was a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to work with a group of other leaders, sharing ideas and experiences making it so easy to put the leaning into a real world context. Being able to train within a small syndicate provided an excellent base for feedback, and keep things interesting with a few challenges between syndicates.

I look forward to being able to look back and reflect on my time with ISL and continue to put into practice some of the most valuable training I have received.

“The timing for me to attend this course was perfect, as I was feeling frustrated with some aspects of my leadership role, even though i was satisfied with most of it. So i turned up to the course very motivated to figure out what i should be doing differently.
On day one i had my first “light bulb moment” and the pace of learning continued from there. That was less than two months ago and I am already well on track to achieving my goals with renewed enthusiasm and commitment.
This is a really amazing course which encourages and supports individual learning at many different levels. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is motivated to enhance their leadership skills.”

This was the best leadership course I have been on. Although we worked hard I found that time just flew past. I found I learnt more about myself and my leadership style than previously and the course keeps you focused to ensure that you take the skills learnt away with you. I found the feedback and support of the team really useful and learnt a lot off others as well. Already I am putting my learnings into practice and have been given an opportunity within my workplace to continue to grow as a leader.

It is three months on from when I attended the Leadership Programme at Nugget Point and the striking thing is that the lessons I took from the course are as fresh now as they were on the plane ride home.
It was a rare opportunity to step away from the day to day bustle of work and look at what I want to achieve in work and life, with thought provoking readings and seminars, time for reflection and the opportunity to spend time with a group of very talented individuals from a range of sectors and industries.
The Programme gave me a chance to see my strengths and challenges as a leader from an ‘outside in’ perspective through the eyes of my Syndicate team. The feedback they gave me was invaluable – very encouraging and direct. The Programme also gave me practical ideas for how I can be more effective as a leader and enjoy my role more, which I have continued to implement since being back in the office. It is fantastic to have access to a Programme of this quality in New Zealand.

I was a bit of a late inclusion for the ISL course so did not have too much time to think about what it might be like. I had heard some mysterious comments from previous attendees in the office, but obviously they were all sworn to secrecy regarding content. Apparently I should be prepared to work hard, to meet some interesting high flying people from various sectors, and to get some very detailed feedback on my strengths and weaknesses. Feedback on strengths and weaknesses was perhaps the bit that had me a little worried if I am honest.

I decided from the outset to throw myself into the week. Given the investment from work, and the obvious quality of the course I thought it was important to get the most out of it. Psychometrics and 360 completed I arrived at Nugget Point on a Sunday afternoon, and was a mixture of enthusiasm and trepidation. Not sure what to expect but convinced that if I put in the effort something rewarding would be gained.

What followed was an intensive week of reflection, challenge and coaching that definitely moved me forward as a manager, leader and a person. There were many highlights, including the syndicate structure, which served to push me to think and reflect on how others work with and perceive me. However, the key learnings came in group and individual coaching sessions. In the busy world of work, deadlines and endless horizons we seldom get the opportunity to sit and listen as someone gives thoughtful deliberate feedback. My coach at Nugget Point was experienced, honest and challenging and by the end of the week I had a new perspective on who I am, what I want and where I want to be.

From start to finish ISL ensured that everything was taken care of so we could focus on the material and the challenges in front of us. The venue was superb, the timing and delivery of the material was professional, and the time given to reflect as a group or alone was incredibly useful. All very slick and I would recommend the course to anyone looking to challenge themselves to make a step up to achieve that something extra with their career.
