The Certificate of Commendation rewards organisational excellence, among other things. Admiral Ledson’s focus on providing experiential development and training opportunities ensured that he also enabled individual excellence.
Admiral Ledson was Chief of Navy for five years - the longest tenure of any New Zealand CN. His work during this time was influenced by his belief in the visionary leadership criteria espoused in the Baldrige framework: Core Values, Vision & Mission, Excellence, Reputation and, most importantly, having the right people. Admiral Ledson wrote about these qualities, talked about these qualities and applied these qualities. He supported his people by genuinely connecting the Navy’s core values to every aspect of work and play.
David Ledson attended the Institute for Strategic Leadership’s sixth Strategic Leadership Programme, which was held from the fifth to the eleventh of October 2003. He was a member of the “Cheeky Smarties syndicate.
